3d / 4d Ultrasound Frequently Asked Questions

We know you are excited about the new comer to your family and have many questions. Below are answers to some of the commonly asked questions:

What is an ultrasound examination?

An ultrasound examination uses high frequency sound waves to produce an image onto a screen that shows the inside of your body. An ultrasound examination is performed by a trained health professional (sonographer) using a smooth, hand held device called a transducer that they move across the body with a sliding and rotating action. The transducer transmits the high-frequency sound waves into your body. The sound waves are then reflected from the different tissues of your anatomy in different ways. The sound waves are converted to electrical impulses, which are used to produce a moving image onto the screen. Ultrasound can take high quality pictures or images of most parts of your body.

What is a 2d/3d/4d ultrasound?

2d ultrasound is like having a black and white picture on a paper. It has only length and breadth. It is used in medical procedures.

3d ultrasound is an ultrasound technique of providing three dimensional (hence the name 3d) image of your baby. The 3rd dimension is like adding height to length and breadth. 3d images are generally used for entertainment purposes.

4d ultrasound is simply a movie of 3d images. The 4th dimension is time or how the 3d image moves with time.

Is the 3d/4d ultrasound procedure safe?

3d/4d ultrasound is non-invasive and safe examination which provides excellent imaging without any significant risk to the patient. There are no injections and there is no pain. There are no proven harmful effects of sound waves at the levels used in ultrasound performed in a proper clinical setting. In most situations, there should not be any after effects from an ultrasound examination. Occasionally, patients report a little tenderness in the area that has been examined, but this is uncommon and rarely persists beyond the first hours after the examination.

Do I need a doctor’s requisition?

No, 3d/4d ultrasound is not a medical procedure and does not require your doctor’s recommendation.

Do I need an appointment?

At King-Mar appointment is recommended. However, we may be able to accommodate short-notice requests and walk-ins from time to time. For your comfort and convenience, we open at 9:00 am 6 days a week (Monday to Saturday).

What preparation do I need for 3d/4d ultrasound?

Please eat food and drink fruit juice before your appointment. Despite all the preparation, it is entirely possible for the baby to not move and for us not to see the baby entirely. It is up to the baby!

Who performs 3d/4d ultrasound at King-Mar?

How early can a baby’s sex be determined?

Despite all the claims and reasons, ideal time to view your baby is 20- 27 weeks of pregnancy because of but not limited to the following reasons:

  • Clear pictures

  • Clear features

  • Accurate determination of sex

At King-Mar, accuracy is very important to us. So we do not provide sex of a baby before 20 weeks. That leaves plenty of time to prepare for the arrival of your little bundle of joy.

How long does the procedure take?

Depending upon the position of the baby and option chosen by you, procedure can take between 5 and 25 minutes. However, no two babies are alike.

How much does it cost?

As a King-Mar patient, you receive considerable discount (20% to 40%) over the market prices and another 13% off in taxes.  Also, you don’t have to worry about prices ending in 99 cents. For your precious memories, our Keep It Straight and Simple (KISS) pricing offers 2 options (these are the total amounts you pay):

Doesn’t OHIP cover 3d/4d ultrasound?

No, OHIP does not cover 3d/4d ultrasound because it is not a medical procedure.

SPECIAL NOTE: Due to the regulatory college's and Health Canada's position at https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/healthy-living/your-health/medical-information/fetal-ultrasound-keepsake-videos.html regarding 3d/4d ultrasound and poor customer demand, this service is no longer offered by King-Mar.
